Jazz dancing

The term Jazz has been coined to describe a collective group of dances; namely a combination of Tap, Ballet and Jazz as the style of dance can be found under many guises as it developed through the ages. Whilst many of the fundamental styles and techniques are heavily traced to African heritage, it was in America that this iconic dance was introduced, and would eventually supersede other contemporary dance styles in pop culture.

Description of Jazz Dancing Style

Jazz dancing is a form of dance that showcases a dancer's individual style and originality. Every jazz dancer interprets and executes moves and steps in their own way. Jazz dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns.

Originally surfacing in New Orleans amongst African American conglomerates, it was here that the dawn of jazz had began giving birth to branches of jazz including classics such as Swing Dancing, The Jitterbug and the Boogie Woogie.

Jazz then started to morph into a new, smoother style which can commonly be found in broadway productions which generally conjure up images of Hollywood glitz and glamour.

Many essential and basic components to these styles of Jazz revert back to strong, sharp movements. Technique is essential for leaps and turns, where correct posture is essential to properly execute such moves, summoning the dancer to have a sense of balance as turns and pirouettes recur throughout the dance sequences.

Different Types of Jazz Dancing Styles

Many interpretations of dance can be found in the following:

  • Hip Hop Jazz - Incorporates many aspects of traditional jazz fused with hip hop street dance. Very popular in younger generations
  • Classical Jazz - This is the basics of Jazz which would include many ballet and tap dancing maneuvers
